Class 38 Guymon

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 traveled to Guymon April 8–11 for an immersive session focused on agriculture & immigration in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The experience began with an agri-tourism exploration of the Black Mesa region, offering a unique look at the area’s geography, history, and rural way of life, followed by opportunities to connect with local leaders, artists, and community members.

The agriculture portion of the program provided in-depth insight into the economic and environmental impact of farming and ranching in the region. Class members heard from industry experts, toured working farms, feedlots, and Seaboard Foods, and engaged in conversations around water conservation, global markets, and food production.

The session concluded with a powerful look at immigration and diversity in the Panhandle. Through panels and breakout discussions featuring educators, business owners, students, and community leaders, participants gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with a diverse and evolving population—and the vital role it plays in shaping the region’s future.

There's an old saying that nobody should watch sausage or legislation being made. Our trip to Guymon pulled back the curtain on both (at least, on the effects of legislation), sometimes in the same breath.

The Seaboard Foods was genuinely remarkable. It’s vast, efficient and organized in ways that are difficult to fully absorb, and it clearly felt like nothing was hidden. It made me think about the scale of effort required to feed a nation and the world, including factors outside of processing, like raising and breeding millions and millions of animals.

The most impactful sessions were on Saturday, however, when we discussed immigration. Yes, we touched on policy. But, even more than other locations, the focus was on the people who are affected.

We talked with a woman who has lived in the United States since she was 5 months old. She grew up here, built her life here, contributed to our communities. Then she lost her right to legal right to work, because the government decided to hobble the system that allowed her to renew her documents. Watching that reality land on the faces of my classmates was one of the more powerful moments I've had in this program.

We heard from others in similar circumstances, the people who make and sustain communities, who are now living in genuine fear about their futures – not to mention their personal safety.

The outdoor time in the Panhandle was a genuine gift. The high desert landscape — Black Mesa, the wide sky, the sense of standing somewhere genuinely remote and ancient — was one of my favorite LOK experiences. There's something clarifying about being out in that kind of open country, and it provided a kind of breathing room that made the harder conversations easier to carry.

My classmates will tell you that in each debrief, I remind people many of the problems we see are not accidents or bad luck. They are policy decisions. With informed, engaged citizens and leaders, we can see better solutions and advocate for actual solutions, not increasing harm.

Beyond that, we also got to explore the full diversity of Oklahoma’s outdoor landscape. I’ll admit it: I didn’t fully appreciate that the Panhandle – No man’s land – contains the high desert landscape I love. We explored the mesas and arroyos, connecting with the geology and the evidence of people and creatures who shared the land hundreds, thousands and millions of years ago.

Previous graduates told me Guymon was the highlight of their experience. I can see why.

The phrase “No Man’s Land”, historically used to describe the Oklahoma Panhandle, makes me think of a hostile and desolate place. However, our trip to No Man’s Land was anything but that. It was beautiful, warm, and full of people and families who truly may be the best thing about the Oklahoma Panhandle.

I will admit, I have dreaded this trip for a long time. I wasn’t looking forward to the long bus ride, the topic, or the pork experience. But something unexpected happened - I actually loved it (well, everything except the karaoke machine on the bus). The people we met were kind and welcomed us as if we were part of their family. From the Apple family in Kenton to Lucinda and Michael Ray, we learned firsthand about the daily hardships ranchers face in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Their passion for their land and way of life was inspiring and made me think differently about our food sources and the grit required to make a living in this part of the state.

A highlight was going to Jerry Lunsford Farms and sharing a meal with Jerry and the Rentz family. Once again, the family theme rang true when even their son joined in to teach us about the farm. To sit on this land that has been in their family for over 100 years was truly special.

On Saturday, we learned about immigration and its connection to the economy. We heard heartbreaking yet hopeful stories from resilient individuals who are making a difference in their communities. Several community leaders and small business owners shared how they have made Guymon home. The community has embraced its immigrants and as a result, Guymon is thriving and diverse. I personally loved hearing about the Alma Folkloric Dancers and the story behind the dance troupe. Art is a powerful communicator and seeing these young dancers celebrate their cultural heritage was beautiful.

I can honestly say that I wish everyone could experience the people and places we were so lucky to visit in the Panhandle. We should all learn about our food – where it comes from and how it gets to our plates, and most importantly, the people who make the entire food system possible.

A mandatory safety meeting at 9:45 AM will ensure everyone is prepared before we begin shooting promptly at 10:00 AM . After the competition, stick around to enjoy lunch and awards from 12:00–1:00 PM , where we’ll celebrate top shooters and great camaraderie.

Participants are welcome to bring their own shotgun or rent one on-site , and ammo for 12 or 20 gauge will be provided .

Class 38 Tulsa

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 met in Tulsa for an impactful session focused on Health & Mental Health. Over two days, participants explored the many factors that influence the health of Oklahomans, including social determinants, access to care, and the critical connection between physical and mental health.

In addition to the core session, class members had the opportunity to participate in optional experiences, including a tour of the Port of Catoosa and a Black Hawk helicopter ride, offering unique perspectives on infrastructure, industry, and service in Oklahoma.

"It is always '70s and sunshine in Tulsa!" a fellow classmate proudly proclaimed as we made our way to the Tulsa session. In typical LOK fashion, we were all looking forward to a packed weekend of fun and information. Although it was cloudy, and at one point the tornado sirens were going off, Tulsa did not disappoint. From TV show production, learning that Oklahoma is not a landlocked state, to the adrenaline rush of a Blackhawk making a swift takeoff, we had a blast, and I am grateful for the hospitality of the Tulsa community.

When the dust settled and the adrenaline wore off, it was time to focus and get ready to absorb as much as possible about health care and mental health in Oklahoma. I was born and raised in rural Oklahoma and currently reside in Woodward. I am very familiar with the struggles that Oklahoma faces when it comes to these issues, although it had never been laid out as plainly for me as it was during the Tulsa session.

The numbers don’t lie. We are not good at health care outcomes, and we are not good at taking care of mental illness. That is where I will leave that. My biggest takeaway from the weekend in Tulsa is how impactful the community is on these issues. You can make a profound change for the good by applying yourself and getting involved on a local level, reaching out, understanding local challenges, and maximizing the resources available.

Tulsa is a great example of a community that has pulled together and collectively decided to lessen the burden for their citizens.

We owe it to ourselves and our neighbors to pull together as a state and get these issues turned around. Through legislation and community action, it can be fixed. I leave you with this: If you know someone who is struggling with substance abuse or a mental illness, wrap your arm around them and get them the help they need. Be bold enough to stand with someone and make sure they know you have their back. After all, that is what the Oklahoma Standard is all about. Thank you to Tulsa and everyone who was involved in our Tulsa session and thank you to Leadership Oklahoma for providing this incredible opportunity.

Our Health & Mental Health session in Tulsa was one of those experiences I’ve continued to think about well after it ended. It wasn’t just the conversations, but the combination of what we saw, who we heard from, and the experiences we were given along the way.

Thursday alone set the tone. I always hear about the Port of Catoosa, but seeing it in person brought a new level of understanding of its scale, activity, and impact on economic development across our state. Going from that to a Black Hawk helicopter ride was one of those moments where you stop and realize how unique these LOK experiences really are. I continue to be amazed by the opportunities we’re given through this program.

As we moved into the health-focused sessions, what stood out to me most was hearing directly from those working in these areas every day, especially around rural access and the barriers many communities face. It highlighted how different the experience can be depending on where you live and how many factors outside of traditional health care play a role in outcomes.

The Oklahoma Health Care Experience panel was especially impactful because it included people who have actually lived through the system, not just worked in it. I also appreciated the opportunity to break into smaller groups, ask questions, and have real conversations during the round robin sessions, especially the discussion around insurance and how much it continues to evolve. Watching students in the simulation lab work through real-life scenarios was a highlight, and it was great to see how our education systems are using that level of technology for training.

I also found myself thinking a lot about how fortunate Tulsa is to have such strong philanthropic support and leadership. You can see it in projects like the new VA Medical Center and feel it in the momentum of the community. It’s clear there are people and organizations willing to step in, invest, and help move important initiatives forward.

From conversations around the economic impact of health care to the collaboration between public safety and mental health services, and the focus on children’s health and prevention, it became clear how connected all of these systems really are.

And somewhere in between it all, whether at the Philbrook Museum, the Gathering Place, or around the table with classmates, it was a reminder of how much the setting and the people really add to the experience.

I left this session with a better understanding of the responsibility we all share in shaping healthier communities in Oklahoma, and the role larger metropolitan health systems can play in advancing services in rural parts of our state. It’s an awareness I likely wouldn’t have gained without the LOK program.

Our February session of Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 in Oklahoma City was a powerful reminder of what intentional leadership and long-term vision can accomplish.

Each community we visit tells a different Oklahoma story — and OKC’s story is one of bold public-private partnership, resilience, and disciplined growth. Having time with Mayor Holt to share his term’s successes and full circle of where Oklahoma City currently stands defined our visit.

It started with a tour of Will Rogers International Airport, which I was unable to attend. The importance of air travel growth is so important to our communities and continue to attract nonstop air service will promote economic growth. The State Capital renovation and artwork is a source of pride. Trait Thompson’s behind the scenes’ tour of the restoration and significant historical art throughout the building was impactful.

Spending time in Oklahoma City reinforced how transformative collaboration can be. The evolution of the city — from MAPS initiatives to downtown revitalization — reflects decades of strategic investment between civic leaders, business partners, and voters who believed in something bigger than the moment. The Olympics LA 28 will be a hallmark event for OKC and bring the international stage to the city and our state. The reception at The Lively at The Oak was a great way to experience firsthand what vision has brought to the city.

The Oklahoma City Thunder is perhaps the most visible symbol of that partnership. What began as an ambitious effort to bring major league sports to Oklahoma has become an economic engine and cultural anchor. The Thunder’s presence has catalyzed arena development, hotel growth, restaurant expansion, national visibility, and a sense of shared pride. It’s not just a basketball team — it’s a case study in how sports can elevate tourism, brand identity, and economic momentum when public and private sectors are aligned. The panel led by Brian Byrnes and Erika Lucas brought the story to life, and I loved being at their headquarters to experience it with their special “surprise and delight” moments.

As someone who works daily in destination leadership, I see parallels in how OKC has leveraged infrastructure investment into tourism growth. Strategic capital projects don’t just change skylines — they change perception. And perception drives visitation, talent attraction, and long-term competitiveness.

Equally impactful was our time at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. Walking through that sacred space is a profound leadership lesson. It is a reminder that tragedy can shape a community — but so can resilience. The Memorial demonstrates how thoughtful placemaking can honor history, educate future generations, and create a powerful emotional experience for visitors from around the world.

I also reflected on how important it is to invest in funding social services. The interactive activity “walking in another’s shoes” was well placed and provided a real-life experience exercise that had me thinking throughout the fireside chat, Sunbeam family services and lived experiences.

From a placemaking perspective, it is also a reminder that authentic storytelling matters. Visitors do not travel simply for attractions — they travel for meaning. Quality of life brings economic development, and it is what makes OKC unique.

Leadership Oklahoma continues to stretch my thinking. It deepens my understanding of how interconnected our cities are and how much we can learn from one another. OKC’s journey reinforces that bold vision, voter trust, private-sector commitment, and disciplined execution are not abstract concepts — they are measurable strategies that change the trajectory of a city.

I left Oklahoma City inspired — as a sister city in collaboration. When Oklahoma’s communities grow stronger together, the entire state benefits

Driving home from Class 38’s session in Oklahoma City, I couldn’t stop thinking about one phrase: the “Oklahoma Standard.” I had heard it many times before, but this weekend, I finally understood what it truly means and more importantly, I saw it in action. Every session, every visit, every conversation reflected that same thread: Oklahomans committed to serving others, lifting their communities, and defining a standard that belongs to us.

Spending time at Will Rogers International Airport and the State Capitol, we heard the history of Oklahomans dedicated to making their communities and their state successful. At the United Way of Central Oklahoma, we learned how state and local entities partner together to form what was described as a “Web of Stability” to meet essential needs such as health, food, and housing. We witnessed those who serve victims and survivors and had the opportunity to “Walk in Another’s Shoes” for a brief period of time. We saw how services are funded and observed firsthand at Pierce Early Childhood how young children and their families are supported through high-quality Early Head Start and Head Start programs, along with comprehensive wraparound services designed to help the whole family thrive. Throughout the day, I found myself quietly reflecting on the courage it takes to do this work every day.

We visited the Clara Luper Sit-In Plaza, which honors thirteen students and their teacher, Clara Luper, who on August 19, 1958 launched a sit-in movement that inspired people across the nation. Their dedication to peace and respect sparked change and opened the doors of once-segregated restaurants and businesses. We also visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, created to remember those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever on April 19, 1995. That sacred ground stands as a testament to resilience, unity, and compassion in the face of tragedy. As one presenter shared, two events that changed Oklahoma and the world sit only five blocks from each other. That statement made me reflect on how one person can make a difference and how a community can come together.

Rise up to honor.

We also spent time with the 2025 NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder and heard how intentional partnership and community investment have helped shape both the organization and the city. From the Thunder to MAPS 4 and its inclusion of innovative projects highlighting social services, to other models that move people toward stability, we saw how Oklahoma City has chosen to define its own future through collaboration across government, nonprofits, philanthropy, and business. I left these conversations inspired, thinking about the ways my own small actions could ripple outward to strengthen my community.

Step up to be kind.

It was at the memorial and museum where we heard the definition of the Oklahoma Standard: an initiative preserving and promoting a culture of caring citizens by encouraging acts of service, honor, and kindness.

Class 38 is learning that leadership is not just about titles or programs. It is about how we respond when it matters most. The Oklahoma Standard does not belong to a museum or a monument. It belongs to the people of this state. While we individually may never have a statue made of our likeness or hoist a championship trophy, we saw that making a difference is possible at every level through local boards, community organizations, or everyday acts of service. This is how each of us, through our career or our volunteerism, can create meaningful change. The Oklahoma Standard sets the bar, and it exists only if each of us chooses to carry it forward.

Spring Summit: Public Safety, Preparedness & Well-Being and Legislative Reception

On February 17, 2026, Leadership Oklahoma hosted the Spring Summit focused on public safety, preparedness, and well-being, convening leaders from across the state for an afternoon of learning, dialogue, and connection. Held in Oklahoma City, the Summit brought together public officials, nonprofit partners, business leaders, and community stakeholders to explore how cross-sector collaboration strengthens Oklahoma’s ability to prevent, respond to, and recover from crisis.

Leadership Oklahoma was honored to recognize Dr. Rachael Melot with the 2026 Helping Oklahoma Award for her impactful volunteer work with the Child Advocacy Center of Central Oklahoma during the luncheon.

The program featured dynamic panel discussions highlighting statewide efforts in emergency management, law enforcement, fire response, and community resilience. Leaders shared real-world examples, lessons learned from recent challenges, and innovative approaches to preparedness.

The Summit reinforced Leadership Oklahoma’s mission to cultivate informed, engaged leaders by providing meaningful access to critical issues shaping our state. Through thoughtful conversation and shared expertise, attendees left better equipped to support policies and partnerships that advance public safety and overall well-being for communities across Oklahoma.

Class 38 Enid

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 gathered in Enid for an immersive and impactful session focused on Energy & Economic Development , offering participants a deep dive into the industries, infrastructure, and people powering Oklahoma’s economy.

The session began with optional experiences that showcased Enid’s culture and community development.

Friday’s programming delivered a comprehensive look at Oklahoma’s evolving energy landscape, with an afternoon filled with tours giving the class an up-close look at the industry in action. The day concluded a t David Allen Memorial Ballpark , where participants enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime class activity, local history, and fireworks. Saturday shifted the focus to economic development and workforce , hosted at Autry Technology Center.

This Enid session exemplified Leadership Oklahoma’s mission to inform, inspire, and equip leaders with the knowledge and relationships needed to understand Oklahoma’s most pressing issues and to help shape the state’s future.

Class 38 Reflections

When we completed our pre-experience survey last August, energy ranked lowest in both my knowledge and interest, with economic development only slightly higher. Compared to topics like education, criminal justice, and tribal sovereignty, these issues felt distant to me. That perspective changed quickly. The Energy & Economic Development session in Enid turned out to be one of the most informative and enjoyable experiences of the program so far.

Over two days of presentations, site visits, and open discussions, our speakers walked us through Oklahoma’s energy landscape, from traditional oil and gas to wind, solar, and renewable natural gas, and showed how closely these industries are tied to workforce development, infrastructure, and long-term economic resilience. I particularly appreciated the focus on workforce partnerships among educational institutions and the reminder that each plays an essential role in building both a skilled workforce and a strong quality of life. The depth of knowledge shared was matched by a genuine commitment to Oklahoma’s future.

Just as meaningful was the chance to learn alongside my classmates and reconnect with LOK alumni from across the state. Meeting leaders in person, many of whom I previously knew only by name in the program directory, reinforced the impressive depth of talent working on behalf of our state.

The hospitality of the Enid community was exceptional. From Thursday evening’s reception and dinner to a police-escorted arrival at Autry Technology Center, we were treated like honored guests. An unforgettable evening at David Allen Memorial Ballpark, complete with our photos on the scoreboard and our names announced on the field, capped the experience. The evening concluded with a quiet moment admiring one of the world’s largest Christmas trees, kept lit just for us.

I left Enid with a deeper appreciation for how interconnected energy, workforce, and community truly are, and for the people in western Oklahoma who care deeply about getting it right.

LOK Class 38 had an amazing session on Energy and Economic Development, courtesy of the good people of Enid, who really rolled out the red carpet that they are known for in NW Oklahoma, a part of the state from which I am proud to originally hail.

After our pre-session lunch at the Enid Brewery where we heard about their use of locally sourced products, we headed to the Grand National Gun Club. While there we learned about wildlife’s economic impact and had the opportunity to blast clay pigeons out of the sky – something this old country boy can still do! Groendyke’s CEO Greg Hodgen thoughtfully challenged us at dinner to take hold of the learning opportunity LOK presents and effect positive change for the future of Oklahoma – a theme that strongly resonates among all of us in Class 38.

On Friday, we heard insightful presentations from leaders across the state’s energy sector covering everything from our energy mix source to our present and future energy needs along with the rights of land-and royalty owners. I was surprised to learn just how much wind energy contributes to our state’s overall electricity generation. Tours of renewable energy locations around Enid were also eye-opening as we saw the economic impact and job creation this space creates.

Saturday’s session on economic development was the highlight for me as this is something I am engaged in during my daily work as a community banker. From workforce development to economic incentives to special state financing, there is a great deal of activity from the local to state level to both expand existing businesses as well as attract new ones to Oklahoma. I am already looking forward to following through more on this because of the contacts I have made through LOK and this session.

In my youth, I recall an Enid that was limping along as it reeled from the Oil Bust of the 1980’s. It was a city facing a declining population reflected in the vacant storefronts across town, but especially in the downtown square. Today, Enid is a robustly vibrant and thriving community with a bustling downtown scene reflective of the diverse economy it has developed in the past 30 years. It is a testament to the resilience of NW Oklahoma, handed down by the rugged pioneers who settled those plains more than 130 years ago.

Class 38 Sulphur

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 gathered in Sulphur from November 13th-15th for an immersive Tribal Government session hosted in partnership with the Chicaksaw Nation . The session was designed to deepen understanding of tribal history, sovereignty, and vital role tribal governments play in Oklahoma's economy and communities.

Class members engaged with tribal leaders, state officials, and subject-matter experts through panels, rountable discussion, and site visits at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. Highlights include conversations on sovereignty, economic impact, public safety, health, education, and intergovernment collaboration, as well as discussions on Sulphur's rebuild and recovery following the 2024 tornado.

It was a privilege and honor for LOK Class 38 to participate in the Tribal Sovereignty session this November in Sulphur, Oklahoma. This experience extended far beyond a traditional educational opportunity, it was a transformative journey that offered a rare, in-depth perspective on the strength, complexity, and effectiveness of tribal sovereignty and governance.

I am grateful to the tribal leaders and department heads who shared their time and knowledge. Their professionalism and dedication to their people and missions left a lasting impression and demonstrated the highly sophisticated and modern framework of tribal governance. I am also thankful to the LOK committee and staff for organizing such a meaningful and impactful session.

On Thursday afternoon in Ada, Oklahoma, participants were given several learning opportunities. I chose to take part in the CLEET training simulation, an experience that was both exhilarating and humbling. Stepping briefly into the role of law enforcement provided a powerful understanding of the split-second decisions, challenges, and immense responsibility officers carry every day. I left with a deeper level of respect and appreciation for the courage, discipline, and service of the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police and all public safety professionals who help keep our communities safe.

I enjoyed the visit to the remarkable Chickasaw Cultural Center on day two, a truly inspiring place that beautifully preserves and presents the rich history, culture, and continued progress of the Chickasaw Nation. Walking through the exhibits and learning about their journey from their earliest history to the present felt like stepping back in time. The strength and resilience of the Chickasaw people, along with the endurance of many other tribal nations, is deeply moving.

Later that day, we were honored to hear from several outstanding speakers, and I was especially moved by Dr. Kelli Mosteller. Her powerful presentation on the history of forced removal brought sobering reflection to this painful chapter in American history. Her reference to the Trail of Tears as the “Trail of Death” restored the true gravity of what was endured and left me reflecting on the extraordinary resilience required not only to survive such injustice, but to rebuild and thrive.

Hearing from Governor Bill Anoatubby and participating in a roundtable discussion with tribal leaders was among the most meaningful moments of the experience. Learning about their leadership journeys, their vision for the future, and the challenges and opportunities they face at the state level was both inspiring and encouraging.

We concluded the weekend with a focus on unity and collaboration, recognizing the critical partnerships that exist between tribal nations and local, county, and state governments. From cross-deputation agreements and emergency services to infrastructure, education, healthcare, economic development, and judicial cooperation, it is clear that a strong foundation for meaningful partnership is already in place.

After reflecting on this experience, I am filled with optimism, passion, and excitement for Oklahoma’s future. Tribal and non-tribal communities alike have a tremendous opportunity to continue strengthening these partnerships. Shared governance, built on mutual respect, is the path forward for preserving resources, improving education and healthcare systems, and strengthening our economy.

As we were asked during the session: Imagine what we could accomplish if we ALL truly worked together?

Our future is bright, and I am confident that by building upon the strong cooperative foundation established by our tribal partners, Oklahoma can continue moving toward a unified, resilient, and prosperous future for all.

The Tribal Sovereignty session was personally and professionally meaningful for me. I grew up in Oklahoma and left around the age of 13 with a limited understanding of Tribal Nations. Tribal history was not taught with depth, and the presence and influence of the tribes felt far less visible than what I have witnessed since returning to Oklahoma as an adult.

Since returning to Oklahoma 10 years ago, I have observed the growing influence of Tribal Nations and have come to appreciate how much of this progress is rooted in stable leadership, intentional transitions of power, and a shared commitment to the seven-generation philosophy. Being hosted by the Chickasaw Nation in Sulphur brought these concepts to life in a powerful and tangible way.

The seven-generation philosophy challenged how I think about leadership and responsibility. It demands consistency, long-term vision, and a deep sense of stewardship. It asks leaders to consider not just immediate outcomes, but the well-being of people they will never meet.

From my perspective as a psychiatrist, I also viewed this session through the lens of trauma and healing. Forced removal and relocation created profound disruptions to safety, identity, and trust. What stood out to me was how stability itself can serve as a mechanism for healing. When leadership is steady, culture is protected, and vision is sustained over time, it creates conditions for psychological safety, restoration, and resilience. This experience reshaped how I understand leadership and the role it can play in helping communities heal across generations.

On December 12, Leadership Oklahoma welcomed the holiday season with our 2025 Winter Party at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center. From 5:30–8:30 p.m., more than 200 LOK members and guests gathered for an evening of festive cheer, connection, and celebration.

With record attendance, it was clear that we’ve beautifully stepped into a space that matched the energy and scale of our network.

Guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and lively conversation in a vibrant, art-filled setting, reconnecting with classmates and meeting new friends across generations of LOK.

Class 38 McAlester

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 convened in McAlester on October 23–25 for an eye-opening session focused on Criminal Justice, Incarceration, and Alternatives . The three-day experience offered members a deeper understanding of Oklahoma’s justice system and its far-reaching social and economic impacts.

Class 38 Reflections

Leading up to the McAlester session, the word “heavy” was one I heard often from numerous Leadership Oklahoma alumni. Most would agree that criminal justice is indeed a heavy topic — complicated, deeply human, and fraught with imperfection. It involves victims, perpetrators, and the wrongfully convicted. While the system is far from perfect, it remains the one we must work within.

The morning sessions at the Pittsburg County Courthouse underscored the system’s complexity — from courtroom proceedings to incarceration. Each presenter did an excellent job explaining their role, but I was particularly struck by McAlester attorney Blake Lynch’s overview of a recent local homicide case. His presentation revealed just how challenging it can be for judges and juries to discern truth — and how, at times, the system fails to get it right. That reality is unsettling for us all.

The experience culminated with a visit to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. Many of those incarcerated there are hardened criminals, yet the visit inevitably stirs an emotional response. It leaves visitors with more questions than answers about mental health, the ripple effects on victims and families, and the broader societal failures that contribute to the cycle.

Despite the heaviness of the session, there were moments of light and inspiration. It was uplifting to witness the courage of corrections officers working on the front lines at OSP, as well as the dedication of the many professionals striving to improve the system. Judge Stoner’s presentation on the effectiveness of drug courts and innovative approaches to addiction was particularly insightful and refreshing. And few in the auditorium were left unmoved by the testimonies of women participating in post-incarceration programs such as ReMerge, TEEM, and McAlester’s Shared Blessings.

The determination of these women — and the success of these homegrown programs — left me with a renewed sense of hope. As former Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Steven Taylor so eloquently stated at dinner, Oklahoma’s history is filled with challenges, but Oklahomans have always shown the ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds when they come together.

My Leadership Oklahoma session in McAlester was one of the most impactful experiences of the program so far. The visit to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant offered a fascinating look at a major state employer and reminded me of the pride and precision behind Oklahoma’s military. A fun highlight of the session was touring Krebs Brewing Company, which offered a refreshing contrast by showcasing small-business innovation and the strong sense of community that defines rural Oklahoma.

The heart of the session, though, centered on hearing from leaders who provided an overview of the criminal justice system, the Department of Corrections, and the Office of Juvenile Affairs. Information provided was both informative and eye-opening. Our conversation with minimum-security inmates provided valuable insight, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and understanding. Their stories served as a powerful reminder that every individual has a past, yet also the potential to shape a better future.

The tour of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary (OSP) was deeply sobering. Seeing the conditions and hearing the history behind the facility brought to life the realities that statistics can’t capture. The OSPs staff debrief reinforced how complex the system truly is, balancing safety, accountability, and the difficult path toward rehabilitation. I was encouraged to learn about post-incarceration programs and drug courts that aim to break the cycle of reoffending.

I left McAlester with a renewed appreciation for the people working toward justice reform and a personal commitment to look beyond judgment, to see humanity, hope, and potential for redemption in every story.

Youth Leadership Oklahoma is currently accepting applications for Class 26 . YLOK is seeking applicants who are current high school juniors and passionate about advocating for their community and state.

During the program, 52 selected students from across the state will travel throughout Oklahoma from May 31-June 5, 2026 and learn about critical issues that impact Oklahomans. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with peers and develop their leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. This program is provided at no cost to the participants. Applications are due December 13th, 2025.

Class 38 Lawton Ft. Sill

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 had a powerful, hands-on session at Lawton/Ft. Sill on September 26–27, diving into the theme of Military and experiencing firsthand the training, discipline, and teamwork that define service life.

Hosted by Ft. Sill’s Fires Center of Excellence, class members were immersed in a full soldier experience—staying in military barracks, participating in early morning physical training, and learning the fundamentals of Army leadership and culture.

Throughout the two-day session, participants explored Ft. Sill’s mission to transform civilians into soldiers, gaining a deeper understanding of military readiness and leadership development.

The session was chaired by Mike Dooley (Class 31 & Lifetime Member) , and supported by an incredible network of LOK alumni and military partners in Lawton and Ft. Sill.

Class 38 Reflections

I was awake an hour early in the Fort Sill barracks on that first day. Too excited to sleep, I decided to get a head start. In the silence, I made my bed the way my grandfather, a WWII Air Force veteran, had taught me when I was five. As I stood toes-to-the-line at 0500, I thought about him and every friend who has served. How brave they were to leave everything behind. I tried to immerse myself in that feeling, to understand what it would be like if this were real.

What followed was brutal and beautiful. My body was pushed to its limits between motion sickness, falling repeatedly and countless Y-squats, but I wouldn't change a thing. I loved every opportunity during this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I loved seeing strong women at Goodyear and Fort Sill. I loved the kindness soldiers showed when I struggled. I loved how my classmates rallied together through every obstacle.

As someone specializing in workforce development, it's my passion to build and showcase career pathways—whether through college degrees, micro-credentials, or on-the-job training. Now I'm better equipped to dispel misconceptions about skilled manufacturing jobs and military life, to help people see these paths clearly.

This program isn't just teaching me about Oklahoma's industries. It's teaching me about courage, community, and what leadership truly means. I am forever changed, and we're only two sessions in. I’m so grateful for this experience and for the strength of my classmates who now feel like family. #TOUGHESTCLASSEVER

Our Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 session at Lawton/Ft. Sill was both humbling and inspiring. Being in the presence of men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting our freedoms filled me with a deep sense of pride and gratitude. Their service, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment are reminders of the strength that underpins our nation. Knowing they undergo 10 weeks of the mental and physical feats that our class experienced for just 36 hours is truly amazing. What also stood out to me was the wealth of knowledge shared by both military and civilian leaders. Their perspectives on leadership, resilience, and service above self were not only insightful but also deeply moving. Each story and lesson carried with it a reminder that true leadership is rooted in integrity, adaptability, and a willingness to place the needs of others before one’s own.

I also came away with a greater appreciation for the communities and families that stand alongside our service members. Their support and dedication are essential to the strength of our military and to the well-being of our state and nation.

Lastly, this session was more than an opportunity to learn—it was a call to lead (and move ��) with purpose. As we reflect on what was shared with us, I am reminded that gratitude is best expressed through action: by living out the values we witnessed, and by serving our communities with the same spirit of commitment and courage.

Lunch & Learn: Community Disaster Recovery at OBU

Leadership Oklahoma hosted an impactful Lunch & Learn focused on Community Disaster Recovery at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. The event, attended by 50 community leaders, explored Shawnee’s innovative Disaster Recovery Playbook, developed in response to the devastating 2023 tornado that swept through the area.

The program was thoughtfully planned by Tina Hanna (Class 36 & Lifetime Member) and Rachael Melot (Class 34 & Lifetime Member) , who gathered an exceptional lineup of speakers representing community leaders, city officials, education leaders, nonprofits, legislators, and emergency management experts.

Three breakout sessions allowed participants to dive deeper into recovery strategies through focused discussions on:

Class Reunions

Class VIII gathered for potluck on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14, from 4 to 7 pm in my daughter’s back yard—Paige and Mike Bass in Nichols Hills. We had fun competitive activities from 4 to 5:30. We had Pickleball and Bean Bag Toss, with Richard Cudjo winning a silver cup as the Pickleball champion and Roger Webb, member of LOK Class 3 and spouse of Class member Jeanie Webb, winning the Bean Bag Toss silver cup!

Potluck followed with lots of great food and fun visiting. We were pleased to have 21 in attendance and plan on having a class gathering on an annual basis.

Class 38 Opening Retreat

Leadership Oklahoma Class 38 officially began their journey together during the annual Opening Retreat , held August 20–22 at St. Crispin's in Seminole, Oklahoma. This first gathering is designed to create the foundation of trust, teamwork, and connection that carries the class through the rest of their experience.

The group embraced what we call the St. Crispin’s Experience —a series of conversations and immersive activities that encourage reflection, vulnerability, and relationship-building. In fact, on the very first morning, the class had to quickly adapt when the electricity unexpectedly went out for an hour. But true to the spirit of leadership, Class 38 adjusted, continued to connect, and fortunately, the lights came back on soon after. It was a memorable start that underscored the importance of flexibility, collaboration, and perseverance.

From the moment I arrived at St. Crispin’s, I was welcomed with genuine warmth and hospitality that immediately made me feel at home. The retreat featured outstanding sessions, each offering unique perspectives and experiences. I gained a deeper understanding of Oklahoma’s story, the challenges that shape our state and the opportunities that lie ahead. I was also stretched outside my comfort zone in ways that were both challenging and rewarding.

Through music, creativity, and interactive learning, I was encouraged to take risks, try new things, and grow alongside my classmates. Listening to their poetry, seeing their art and participating in performances reminded me of the courage it takes to share one’s voice and gifts with others. This retreat not only introduced me to extraordinary leaders and teachers but also gave me space to grow. Thanks to Leadership Oklahoma’s thoughtful planning and dedication, the retreat was truly unforgettable and has set the stage for an exciting year of learning and service. I have no doubt that Class 38 is inspired and ready for the journey ahead.

When I arrived at St. Crispin’s for the LOK retreat, I’ll admit I was a little nervous. As an ambivert, walking into new groups can take me a while to warm up, but that hesitation disappeared quickly. From the “Not On My Resume” icebreaker to the St. Crispin’s Experience, the program broke down barriers and built connections. It reminded me of church camp as a kid, only this time with cards and alcohol.

I landed in the dance group, which had me self-conscious at first, but soon realized most of us shared the same fear. That shifted the focus to teamwork and laughter. By the end, those activities had formed bonds in hours that otherwise would have taken much longer.

The speakers were another highlight. Dr. Blackburn’s presentation on Oklahoma’s trailblazers was inspiring, and Dick Pryor’s session on “How’s Oklahoma Working for You” showed how much work still lies ahead. Chairman Caldwell’s Oklahoma Budget 101 was eye-opening, and StrengthsFinder reminded me I shouldn’t be stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean.

No retreat is complete without a few good stories. Houston Brittain’s tale of riding a 1500-pound bull grew larger with each telling was a highlight. What stood out most, though, was the openness of my classmates. Conversations weren’t about trying to be heard, but about listening and learning. That diversity of perspective excites me most about this year. And there is no doubt, even in its infancy, that LOK Class 38 is THE BEST CLASS EVER .

Youth Leadership Oklahoma Class 25

From June 1–6, 2025, 50 rising high school seniors took part in an unforgettable journey as members of Youth Leadership Oklahoma Class 25. Over the course of just six days, these bright young leaders traveled 735 miles , exploring the people, places, and possibilities that make Oklahoma unique.

Their path took them through Edmond, Oklahoma City, Tecumseh, Lawton, Sulphur, Tulsa, Stillwater, Enid, and back to Oklahoma City , where they met with an extraordinary lineup of leaders shaping our state's future.

From Justice Jim Winchester to Governor Bill Anoatubby, and from doctors, journalists, CEOs, and nonprofit leaders to Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur and energy visionary Harold Hamm , the students had front-row access to some of the most influential voices in Oklahoma. Each conversation opened their eyes to the challenges our state faces—and the opportunities they may one day lead.

The week concluded with an engaging Mock Legislation session at the Oklahoma State Capitol, guided by Joe Dorman and Representative Daniel Pae , before the students proudly graduated at the Oklahoma History Center.

We are incredibly proud of these young leaders for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and heart. Youth Leadership Oklahoma Class 25 represents the future of Oklahoma—and the future looks bright.

Class 38 Orientation & Welcome Reception

On July 25, 2025, Leadership Oklahoma officially kicked off the journey for Class 38 with a special evening at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. The event drew nearly 100 alumni and guests, all gathered to give our newest class a warm and enthusiastic welcome.

This year, we introduced a new format by hosting the Class Orientation prior to the reception, allowing participants to dive into program expectations, logistics, and introductions before stepping into the celebration.

Class 38 was greeted with hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a warm atmosphere full of excitement and encouragement. From heartfelt introductions to shared stories from alumni, the reception set the tone for a transformative year ahead.

We’re thrilled to embark on this journey with Class 38 and look forward to the leadership, insight, and impact they will bring to communities across Oklahoma.

The Distinguished Leadership award celebrates an individual who has demonstrated exemplary service to Leadership Oklahoma over the last year.

Selection is based on the nominee’s engagement and participation in LOK member events and activities, along with their support and contribution of talents to the mission and vision of Leadership Oklahoma.

You do not have to be a Leadership Oklahoma member to nominate, however the nominee must be a current Lifetime or Annual Leadership Oklahoma member. The award will be presented at the Opening Reception of the LOK Fall Forum on November 6 at Choctaw Landing Resort in Hochatown.

These communities include Seminole, Lawton/Fort Sill, McAlester, Sulphur, Enid, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Guymon, and Stillwater. During these gatherings, participants will engage in discussions focusing on the complex social, environmental, and economic challenges that impact our state. The aim is to foster thoughtful inquiry, rigorous analysis, and innovative solutions for the betterment of all Oklahomans.

Through these immersive experiences, Leadership Oklahoma ensures that its members gain a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted issues facing our state. By fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and meaningful connections, this esteemed program empowers its participants to become catalysts for positive change.
